On a sunny morning, Nala, the gentle therapy dog, arrived at the school she visits weekly, her tail wagging with excitement. It was the first day of school, and she was there to offer comfort and support. As Nala entered the hallway, she noticed a little boy named Ethan holding tightly to his dad's leg, tears streaming down his face. Ethan was nervous and scared about being away from his dad, and he didn't want to let go.
Nala sensed the boy's anxiety and gently walked over to him, her soft, golden fur glistening in the morning light. She sat down quietly beside Ethan, her big, soulful eyes looking up at him. Ethan glanced down and met Nala's warm gaze. Her presence was calm and reassuring, and Ethan felt a small wave of comfort wash over him.
Nala gave a gentle nudge, encouraging Ethan to pet her. Tentatively, Ethan reached out and ran his hand over Nala's soft fur. As he continued to pet her, he began to feel a little braver. Nala wagged her tail, her quiet confidence and loving nature making Ethan feel at ease.
Seeing Ethan begin to relax, Nala's handler explained that Nala was there to help kids feel better and more comfortable at school. Nala had a special way of making people feel happy and safe. Ethan looked at Nala again, and this time, he smiled a little. With a deep breath, Ethan gave his dad a hug and slowly let go.
With Nala by his side, Ethan walked into his new classroom. He felt a sense of courage he hadn't felt before. Throughout the day, Nala stayed close, offering her silent support and encouragement. Whenever Ethan felt unsure, he would look at Nala, and she would be there, reminding him that everything would be okay.
By the end of the day, Ethan was smiling and laughing with his new friends, Nala's comforting presence helping him through his first-day jitters. As he left school, Ethan gave Nala one last pat and whispered, "Thank you, Nala. You made my day so much better."
And Nala, the sweet therapy dog, wagged her tail happily, knowing she had made a difference in a little boy's life.
There are many other stories like this, and some sad ones of Nala visiting patients in the hospital. All of this is made possible by funding from WAGS Pet Therapy of Kentucky.
There are many more children like Ethan that need comfort, if it's the first day of school, someone to read to, or being comforted after a family members unexpected death.
More therapy teams like Nala and her handlers are needed. Please give generously so Nala and all therapy animals can continue their great work.
