Have A Heart Clinic

The Have a Heart Clinic was established in 2008 as the only stand-alone cardiovascular clinic in Kentucky dedicated exclusively to serving the uninsured and underinsured. The Have a Heart Clinic offers state-of-the-art, complete cardiology care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. Operated with volunteer assistance from over 75 professionals, we purposely located the clinic in downtown Louisville to be near the population we serve. 

We live with an inadequate health care system. Uninsured people often delay getting healthcare and, thus, get no preventative care.  Those who are underinsured forgo healthcare due to unaffordable co-pays or deductibles.  In many instances, people must choose food, clothing, and shelter over medical care.  Have you ever had to decide between feeding your family or paying rent and seeking care to prevent a heart attack?  Many people in our community make these decisions daily.  Residents of marginalized neighborhoods, particularly minorities, are known to have lower access to public transportation, health care insurance, and healthy food choices. 70% of our patients come from these communities and 25% of our patients have limited language proficiency. 

Through our Casey Rasmussen Preventive Cardiology and Health Equity Center, we also change patients' thinking on lifestyle choices and chronic illness management. Our dedicated team develops individual care plans to identify realistic, long-term lifestyle changes to improve overall patient health. 

Since 2008, the Have a Heart Clinic has:

• Logged over 17,000 patient encounters
• Registered over 25,650 volunteer hours
• Conducted over 13,000 cardiovascular screenings
• Provided over one million dollars of free patient care

Who We Are

The Have A Heart Clinic is a 501(c)(3) organization founded on the belief that “free care doesn’t have to cost much.” Based in Louisville, Kentucky, the Have A Heart Clinic provides quality, complete cardiovascular care to uninsured, underinsured, and insured patients.

Since 2008, the Clinic’s volunteer cardiovascular specialists have treated patients from all over Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Indigent patients are assessed, diagnosed, treated and educated about heart disease prevention. Through our Coordinated Care Model, patients are referred to other providers who can assist them obtaining prescription medication, therapy, case management and other health resources.

Our patients are often referred to the Clinic either because they cannot afford the high premiums mandated by insurance plans or they have the wrong insurance (i.e., their provider does not accept Medicaid coverage). Therefore, they go without insurance coverage.

The long-term goal of the Have a Heart Clinic is for insured patients to offset the cost of care the Clinic provides for free. This “pay it forward” method of care is what sets the Have A Heart Clinic apart from other providers and the very thing that has made the Clinic a sustainable success.
