"A world where nature is cherished, protected, and restored."

Ninety-five years ago, Isaac W. Bernheim ‘gave for good’ by gifting Bernheim Forest to the people of Kentucky. You can continue his legacy today by donating to Bernheim and helping us protect this cherished landscape for generations to come.

Today, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum spans 16,142 acres, making it the largest privately-owned forest focused on conservation and education in the Eastern U.S. This includes a 600-acre arboretum and over 40 miles of hiking trails, offering an innovative space for conservation, education and outdoor recreation. Supported entirely by members and donors, Bernheim serves as a sanctuary for nature and humans alike.

Bernheim plays a critical role in environmental stewardship, protecting more than 25 square miles of forest, which includes 13 stream headwaters that provide clean water to local communities and habitat to millions of wildlife. The forest’s woodlands, prairies, and wetlands contribute to clean air and support an incredible range of biodiversity. Wildlife research, such as tracking golden eagles and reintroducing species like quail, highlights Bernheim’s commitment to conservation. These efforts are vital in the face of today’s climate crisis, ensuring that Bernheim continues to be a refuge for both flora and fauna.

Bernheim is deeply committed to education and public engagement, inspiring future environmental stewards through a variety of programs. From curriculum-based school programs to homeschool hikes and seasonal festivals, Bernheim provides nature-based learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. One highlight is Playcosystem, a 17-acre natural playground designed to encourage adventurous, imaginative play in harmony with the environment. Over 375,000 people visit Bernheim each year, participating in public programs and exploring its trails, ensuring that the connection between people and nature remains strong.
