We believe the collective empathy and celebration of the human spirit experienced through storytelling serve the full flourishing of communities and individuals. We center joy and connection through the following:
Comprehensive health and wellness: The vitality of our work stems from our ability to provide services that support the wellness of our communities through storytelling. We do this by implementing healthy, equitable ways of working and creating. We are also committed to telling stories that support social transformation, liberation, and healing. For example, we’ve partnered with nurse and artist Tara Rynders on The Clinic. This project combines art-based practices like music and movement with caring science to create immersive experiences through Collective Care resiliency workshops for healthcare professionals.
Amplifying Young Voices: Invigorated by the belief that art-based tools set young people up for success in all areas of life, our Learning and Creative Engagement initiatives offer various points of entry in school, on stage, and online. For example, this summer Actors Theatre of Louisville hosted a New Voices storytelling master class with UNIVERSES. The award-winning ensemble members guided young people through writing their own poetry, songs, and monologues. This program was offered on a sliding-scale, including full scholarships to the majority of participants to ensure accessibility to our programming.
Artistic innovation and celebration: We are committed to the development and production of compelling world premieres that introduce resonant new stories to our communities here in Louisville, as well as to launching work that contributes to the field nationally. This fall, we are thrilled to offer several incredible in-person experiences, including the return of Kate Hamill's adaptation of Dracula, followed by Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, a family friendly celebration of Hanukkah. We kick off the new year in partnership with Kentucky Shakespeare to present Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, and Mrs. Krishnan's Party returns for an immersive Annam festival party for all to attend at the theater!
MISSION
Actors Theatre of Louisville unlocks human potential, builds community and enriches quality of life by engaging people in theatre that reflects the wonder and complexity of our time.
ABOUT
Actors Theatre is an arts and culture organization as social enterprise, sharing experiences centered in a commitment to the ongoing disruption of the cycles of oppression, marginalization, and exploitation. Anti-racism and anti-oppression are essential in an ecosystem that has profited from the historic antecedent of plantation capitalism. In pursuing a synthesis of art and service, we have become an interdisciplinary laboratory where art, emergent technology, and social transformation meet for a storytelling (r)evolution.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Actors Theatre of Louisville sits on the unceded land of many Indigenous communities including the Shawnee, Cherokee, Chickasaw and Osage people. Indigenous peoples have always lived on the land that is now called Kentucky and continue to live here today.
